Pump Selection in a "PV" System

For the correct selection of a solar pump used in photovaltaic (PV) system, it is necessary to know:

  • Desired daily water quanitity.

  • Total head (static + dynamic).

  • Installation location.

  • Working period (seasonal or year round).

Based on location determine from related maps and tables the following values:

  • Average day sunlight per year, minimum and maximum.

  • Average daily sunlight per months, minimum and maximum.

  • Optimal tilt angle of the photovoltaic solar panels.

Starting with daily sunlight radiation the number kW hrs is determined for sizing the solar panels. These are typically 250 or 300 watt panels.

Dividing the required water quantity by the hours, nominal pump flow is determined. The flow with the required head, then allows for correct pump selection.

Our technical department is available to assist you in this and all solar pumping questions.

Sizing Example

Daily Volume "Q": 115 gallons (26mt3)

Total Head "H"= 165 ft (50m)

Location: Mossano, Vicenza, Italy

Latitude: 45° 25'

Longitude: 11° 33'

Optimal tilt angle: 35°

If the pump is used year round, consider the average daily sunlight radiation value or 3.8kWh/m2 (w.85 hrs @1kW/m2). Considering the required daily volume a pump producing 26/3.85=6.75m3/h or 30 GPM should be selected.

If the pump is used only in the summer (June, July, August), the average daily sunlight radiation for those months is higher or

6.05 kWh/m2 (6.05 hrs @ 1kW/m2).
